car acting up.....

If the car shuts off and the dash goes dark then it's your ignition switch, otherwise it could be the igniter.

but if it were the ignition switch would that also cause the rpm meter to jump suddenly while im accelerating, for example; when leaving from a stop sign(and im not gunning it) the second i reached 3000rpm the meter would jump to 5000rpm however the acceleration is not affected.

You could have a tach that's acting up. My speedo is doing a similar thing. It says I'm either driving zero or 90!

No, the ignition switch wouldn't cause the tach to jump up. The igniter can cause your tach to shoot up. Looks like your igniter is about to die. Make sure you replace the plug, caps, rotors and wire with genuine ones and with the correct type. These could cure the problem.
