Im very new to cars but I want to learn, this is my first post

I got a 97 civic dx with 178,000 miles on it. Sometimes, the speedometer doesnt work and then, it works. when the speedometer doesnt work, the odometer stops working too. And the back led doesnt light up. is there an easy way to fix this?

 

yes. your VSS is going out. It is a lil black plug on the top of your transmission (i can get a pic for you if ya need one).

it costs about $90 bucks from your local autoparts store and can be changed in about 10 minutes.

my only other question would be do the lights only go out when the speedo dies..if sometimes the lights wont lite up but the speedo still works, than I would replace the light dimmer switch..when it starts going it turns off the gauge cluster lighting.

 

the light doesnt come on at all

 

replace the dimmer switch.
