98 Civic 4 Dr LX Heat Shield Question
Hi,
New here. I have a heat shield that is rattling from corrosion. Question:
Is the Heat Shield essential? That is, do I need to replace it or is it to protect the mechanic working on the car?
If I need to replace it, do I just purchase it from the dealer or can I get it from an online store. I looked up heat shield but it doesn't appear to be a part sold online. Is there a more technical term?
thanks in advance.

the exhaust manifold heat shield is essential. I have seen multiple cases where people remove them permanently and just run the exposed stock part and then it ends up cracking. The exhaust manifold is made of cast iron which when hot if hit by cold water will crack almost instantaneously. You can just replace it with a new shield, you can find them anywhere online or you could always get a nice new performance header.
I have the same car and had the exact same problem. Just put the car on ramps, find where the corrosion took place, and wrap a steel clamp around that spot. You know the clamps where you put one end in and screw it tight. Works perfect.

Thanks NeverBX and aeromang.
It turns out that the heat shield I am talking about is the one that is on top of one of the long exhaust pipes near the front. There is another one with the manifold.
I'll take your advice aeromang and try it.
I talked to a Honda Service guy and he tells me that due to liability reasons he has to inform me to replace it but on a personal level, he sees no reason to repair it. He said I could chuck it out if I want to.
But I'll try the metal clamp approach. Seems cheap and useful.
