Does anyone know how to change the shift bushing on a 96 civic. I've gone through the 'search' area and cant find much about it. the shifter in my car is really sloppy. Can anyone give me step by step instructions to replacing the shift bushing, and putting in a short throw shifter? thanks

 

can anyone help me? shifting from fourth back to third when i mean to shift to fifth is not fun. i think this is in the wrong forum so ill post it in the civic forum too but any help would be helpful

You need to get underneath the car.

You will see two rods that consist of your shift linkage: the shifter rod (the one that moves) and a stabilizer rod (the one that is bolted to the side of the tranny). At the end of the stabilizer rod is the first bushing. Unbolt it from the tranny and pry that old bushing out. Then press the new one in with all your might just as the old one came out. Then rebolt and that bushing is done.

The other bushing is behind the shifter assembly where the two rods connect. Unbolt it from the underside of the car and remove it from the two rods. Place the new one in and rebolt it. That is the end of the bushing install.

Personally, I think the slopiness could be due to a loose connecting bolt between the shifter and the shifter rod. Check that first before you do anything.

 

this is probably a dumb quesiton, but how do i check that bolt. is it just under the car. do i just tighten it with a wrench. thanks

 

Yes, it is underneath the car where the shifter meets the shifter rod. And yes, just tighten it with a wrench.

 

i just got engergy suspention shift bushings, and put them in yesterday. it didn't change anything. my shifter is still really loose just like before. when its in gear it can move side to side like 2 - 3 inches. I thought the new bushings were going to sol;ve the problem but it didnt. what do i do now?

 

The bushing isn't the problem, like I mentioned earlier, but rather bad spacing or a loose bolt where the shifter meets the shift linkage. Have you checked that at all?

 

i bet that someone has took out the drive pin in the linkage and put a bolt in it so it can easly be removed... check and see if theres a bolt in the linkage were the 2 meet not thestabilzer the (rod that moves ) look were its hook to the tranny is there a bolt or a roll pin? if theres a pin in it then it is probally the bolt that gose to the shifter.thats making it sloppy.... but if there is a bolt not a pin then thats the prob take the bolt out and get a roll pin from honda and remove the bolt put the pin in and there your done shifter should be tight as stock..
