Default top speed question...

here's and interesting question... in my owner's manual for my del sol, it lists top speen for each trim type in 95 (even though i have a 94). S = 3rd gear, 92 mph. Si = 3rd gear, 85 mph. VTEC = 3rd gear 82 mph. WTF? hahaha, i feel like i missed something. can someone please explain this to me so i feel less like a retard? thanks

your scentence was really broken up and poorly constructed so its unclear as to what you were saying exactly, but if i interrpurted it right then:

the vtec models had shorter gearing to keep the RPMS up in the powerband. the lower trims had longer gearing for fuel economy

well in a sense, yes. but the fact that the S has the less powerful engine it wouldnt get up to the speed that the tranny can get it up to because of the power issue(does that sound clear?).

Del Sol VTEC has a lot shorter gearing than the other two to keep it in it's powerband. So theoretically the other two have a higher top speed than the VTEC model but it doesn't have the power to get it up there.

my thought was also, it prolly doesn't hit it's top speed as quick as the Si OR VTEC. correct?

no, because it has longer gear when you shift you drop out of the higher rpm powerband and it takes longer to get back into it..

im not sure, but you may be able to take the 5th gear of an S and pop her into an SI tranny.. i know i did that back on my integra->accord gear..

but then when you shift from 4th to 5th, your rpms will drop way down and you wont accelerate as fast, but you will have the top speed / fuel economy.

this is part of the reason big displacement V8s and what not have big advantages.. they have tons of torque so they can have long gears. there power band is practically everything off idle, so they can accelerate thru long gears and have a much higher top speed.

to counteract "running out of gears" as its called (when you have the power to keep going faster, but you are hitting the rev limiter.. but if you go longer gears, you will accelerate a lot slower) they introduced 5 speeds and 6 speeds.. (and 7 if you have a million bucks to drive a buggatti v16 quad turbo)

I'd trade my left nut for one of those ^

lol. i thought of just shortening 4th & 5th, cuz my car does't have the power to ccelerate much in those. it'll it like 66 in 2nd, and close on 90 something in 3rd. after that, it takes for ever to hit 115 which is the speed i have yet to pass.
