Could be that the bearing on the pulley is bad so it's just roasting it away. Are you sure it's smoke and not coolant? The coolant can also mist which I guess could be mistaken for smoke.

The a/c compressor clutch is shot. Time for a new compressor unless you can find the clutch seperate.

i looked at it this morning. it now makes this noise all the time while the engine is on. i also noticed that the a/c fan fuse blew so i replaced it. the a/c still didnt work and the noise id not go away. when i turned it off i noticed the smoke again, i also noticed like a oil substance between the pulley and the compressor.

I had the same problem, It was the clutch and everytime I turned it on after a while a really bad smelling smoke would come out the side of the pulley. My compressor started acting up only because I tried to put the civic compressor on the integra bracket causing it to have to much play because only two bolts were in, which made the pulley loose which made the bearings and clutch messed up.. Also it is very much possible to take off your compressor, but you if you take it off you empty the a/c system. Look in the online resources area and get the helms manual for your car or for a car like it, and then find the area that explains how to remove a a/c compressor

i found a location that sells the clutch kit . ( contains the pulley, bearing, and hub) it does not contain the field coil ( #11). HOW can i tell that the field coil is bad, i would just replace it also but its over $70 on its own.

also how do i check the oil in the compressor? how can i tell how much it has?

i saw the instructions at honda.co.uk/civicmanual . did you have to take out the compressor to replace the clutch or did you do it while it was still in the car????
