If you've ever had your dash out i'm sure u've seen it. but the black ground wire plugs right into a special prong thing that sticks off of it.. i'll make sure it's a grounded tomarrow.. this is extreamly frustrating because i'm in the process of breaking in my fresh motor & i keep accidently hitting the rev limiter.. i kno this has to be horrible on it too! The boost just rev's out each gear so quickly that the tone of the motor isn't enough coz i'm not used to it yet.
actually if you read the break in on the resources, you shoul break it in by driving it hard

ok, i came home from work & did the voltage check & checked my ground out.. i put my ground lead on the ground that we were talkin bout earlier in the thread & put the positive lead on a 12v source & it worked fine. i proceded by leaving the ground leed connected to that point & began moving the positive lead across each wire on the two main connectors for the gauge cluster with the key in the run position. These are my results. someone please help me out with this.

Big Plug (closer to drivers side door normally)

Red = nothing
red/black = nothing
black/yellow = 12.45
blue = 12.44
yellow/red = nothing
white/blue = 4.54
yellow/white = nothing

Smaller Plug (closer to passenger side of cluster normally)

red/green = nothing
green/red = nothing
green/red = nothing
black = nothing
yellow/green = nothing
yellow = 12.46
green = 0.05
blue/white = 11.67

do you have a dash wiring diagram...it should tell you what color wire is supposed to go where..thus defining which wire should have what voltage when checked...h:

ok.. this just in!

i ripped the cluster out of my daily driver DX & put it in & that works in there..

is there a difference between the wiring that goes into the cluster for the EX (auto) vs the DX (manual) clusters?

fraid so man, the wiring is the same. plug and play.

Since I went through all the work, I'm still going to post this...

Big Plug (closer to drivers side door normally)

Red = nothing ~~fine without lights on
red/black = nothing ~~fine without lights on
black/yellow = 12.45 ~~good
blue = 12.44 ~~fine
yellow/red = nothing ~~fine
white/blue = 4.54 ~~odd, but ok
yellow/white = nothing ~~full tank

Smaller Plug (closer to passenger side of cluster normally)

red/green = nothing ~~??
green/red = nothing ~~??
green/red = nothing ~~??
black = nothing ~~ground
yellow/green = nothing ~~strange...
yellow = 12.46 ~~good
green = 0.05 ~~??
blue/white = 11.67 ~~ok

hopefully you didn't have the car running when you did this.
low oil pressure, alternator and CEL were on.

I went through the Service Manual and here is what is supposed to be there.
C510 - 10pin gray
1- blu/wht - seatbelt light (gnd with seatbelt not fastened, 12volts with fastened)
2- grn - trunk indicator (gnd with trunk open, 12volts with trunk closed)
3- yel - power (brake, low oil pressure, seatbelt, CEL, ABS, trunk lights, speedo, tach)
4- yel/grn - coolant temp (the lower the temp of the engine the higher the voltage)
5- blk - ground
6- grn/orn - CEL (gnd with CEL on, 12votls with CEL off)
7- not used - no wire(low fuel in canadan cars)
8- blu/red - ABS light (same as CEL)
9- grn/red - brake signal (gnd with e-brake set, 12volts with e-brake released)
10- red/orn - high beams (12volts when on, gnd when off)

C511 - 12pin
1 - no wire????
2 - no wire????
3 - blk/yel - 12volts through fuse #12
4 - no wire????
5 - blu - ignitor (tach) signal
6 - no wire????
7 - grn/red - low oil pressure switch (gnd with car not running, 12volts with car running)
8 - wht/blu - from alt, (~12volts with car running, 0-5V with car off)
9 - grn/blu - left turn (12volts when on, gnd when off)
10 - grn/yel - right turn (12votls when on, gnd when off)
11 - yel/blu - VSS signal
12 - yel/wht - fuel level (lower the fuel level the more voltage, 5v=empty ~0v=full)
