I would highly recommend looking into ABS body repair, they're only in a few states, but they do awesome work.

By the way, why would you want to powdercoat piping under your car?? (not sarcastic)

So the piping wont rust since its not full stainless steel.

You don't powder coat exhaust parts. You get them jet coated or ceramic coated. Powder coating is usually applied in only a 400 degree process. It depends on the coating, but exhaust parts can reach as high as 1600°F. At least one of my exhausts can.

Aluminized steel will rust. Especially if/where it gets scratched, but it's a hell of a lot better than untreated stock. Once it starts rusting anywhere, the coating is worthless.

Usually it's not the pipe that rusts first but the hangers that are welded on to the pipe. This has happened all the time. Eventually the hanger rust spreads to the pipe causing a hole to start in the pipe. The welds are probably not made of the same grade of steel as the pipe.

52 posts and YOU get a MEDAL :woowoo:

Watch out for this guy. He's going places.

Where the welds are, the materials actually change their molecular composition from the heat of being welded and the fact that the filler rods have to be a different material for Stainless Steel. Different materials than the pipe will cause a cathodic effect (like a battery), and cause one of them to corrode.

There are several different kinds of stainless steel. Some are way more resistant to corrosion than others; but after you heat it up, it gets weaker. That process is called annealing. You have to anneal stainless steel pipes in order to bend them. That's why a stainless exhaust is discolored where the welds and bends are. It can be polished out, but no matter how shiny you make it, some of the strength of the pipe is gone forever.

I have a 1 year old Apexi N1 and a hanger recently broke off, taking a 1" x 2" chunk of pipe with it. My solution... weld it back on there. (Edit: It's not stainless, though... if it were, it would take like 5x as long to go.)

to add my $0.02
aluminized steel piping will not rust unless acted on by something. either the hanger rusting or being scratched. Once that happens it's normal steel, and rust will take over quickly.

Also beware of companies selling full cat-back exhausts with stainless steel mufflers. Notice they didn't say that the piping was stainless....
Then again mine is stainless yet the pipes are corroding away under my hatch because it's not the same quality stainless as the muffler, which looks almost brand new.
