Default 97 Civic Engine

Does the factory 1.6 SOHC engine on a 97 Civic EX have VTEC or not? My friend thinks it does, because everybody says that that year has it, but it does not say VTEC on the Valve Cover or anywhere else on the car, and i have driven it and there is no noticable spike in power past 4,000 or 5,000 rpma. My other friend has a 95 Civic EX with the 1.6 SOHC, and it says VTEC on the Valve cover, just like my 98 Accord.

yes it does have vtec. it wont say anywhere on the car. to make sure its the stock engine in there, read the engine code on the block, it should say d16y8. you wont be able to feel or hear vtec in a stock sohc vtec either.

VTEC seems like it would be a high selling point for a car, why not put it in the valve cover, other civics have it printed on it. Do the 96-98 Civic EXs not have it for a certain reason?

i wanna enable vtec on my d16y8 but i dont think it can  ,prove me wrong cuz i dont know much of this stuff  and im not about to swap an engine mainly because i dont really give a crap for racing, i want more show all im doing to my engine is a CAI, and prolly some headers. also an exhaust.

btw my reason for not racing = not on insurance, dont want to go on it yet, no money, and it will cost me 5 grand a year i live in new york, under 25 male thats y its sooo much. i paid 5 grand for my car y would i wanna pay 5 grand a year for insurance. I'll just stay incogneto for as long as i can.

oh yeah i officially hate my cousin. By extreme luck her boyfriend got her i think a '99 integra for only $650, no body dmg and all it needs is a new radiator. But thats taken cared of since her father is a mechanic. Talk about lucky :wtc: :wtc:

if i only waited another 4 months sigh.....

What do you mean "enable vtec"?????? Its already there if its a y8... If vtec wasnt working you would get a cel (more than likely)

The only way that a 97 civic EX wouldn't have Vtec is if it's the Canadian Version, at least the 4DR EX doesn't....it's got the Y7 powerplant

regards
