man this sucks....
I bought a used car a couple of days ago cuz i had some extra cash while my other car is being worked on. Anyways i go out today and try to start it up and come to find out that my car wont start
i could hear the starter spinning and whining but the car wont start at all. So i push start the damn thing to the store to see how much a new starter will be and its going to cost me over 200 bucks for a new one...this sucks....oh yeah i cant afford a new one till friday which is basically when my other car gets done being worked on....
just in case u wanna know its a 96 Civic EX i got for like 3.8K :P just thought id share my shits

when you say you hear the starter clicking and whining, does that mean the engine is turning over? Starters when they go bad, generally will make a whirring noise but you won't hear the actual turning over noise you're used to hearing. That's because the starter is not engaging the flywheel. So if it is just whirring, then it is your starter, otherwise, it is something else.
BTW, if it is a bad starter, take a hammer and whack on the starter housing a few times beforehand, that will force the starter to engage the flywheel and allow you to start the car. It's not a permanent fix, but will get you out of a bind until you get a new starter.

naw its not turning over....and yes i know for sure its the starter...
and i have been "whacking" it off LoL just so it can engage....its a pain in the but though when it doesnt start again i have to take off the CAI and just to get to the damn thing...hell if anyone else has a temp fix for this easier than what ive been doing please post away

only 122 for a remanufactured one..also where are you? states/canada/europe...most Discount Auto Parts stores have great parts like starters/alternators and stuff like that really cheap....pepboys and auto zone are the most expensive..they have the same parts from the same manufacturer for close to 50% more like my slave cylinder for my clutch was only 80 bucks at Discount but at pep boys it was 140. and both were from the same manufacturer and same part #

If its bolted down tight, take it off and check the teeth on the starter and the teeth on the flywheel. It would suck if you bought a new starter but your flywheel's trashed. It's not common, but not impossible.
If you have a BAP-GEON in your area, they'll be cheaper than everybody.

Ouch! That sounds pretty shady. Call and get a quote from Advance on that thing. Either that, or buy a used one from a salvage yard for like $50-75. You need to spend some time shopping around.
Seriously... these things usually either work forever, or about 100k miles. I put 400,000 miles on an import (Toyota 22R). The first starter went bad around 70k, I put a used $75 starter on mine that had 130k on it, and it went the rest of those 400,000 miles.
You may be able to save about $200 on your problem by calling the right places. Grab your yellow pages, man.
