you're thinkin the 6th gen, where the D16 EX was VTEC, while the D16 HX was VTEC-E.... the D17A2 (7th gen EX) is VTEC-E just like the HX, this only started with the seventh generation. now, the EX/HX motors are both lean-burn combustion engines, different output and fuel consumption but they're both VTEC-E

it doesn't matter, who the hell cares if its a lean burn motor? it still produces as much horsepower, more torque, both of which at earlier peaks in the powerband, with better gear ratios, and while getting better gas mileage than the outgoing D16. the gains on both motors (despite having a returnless fuel system now) are similarly dismal, SOHC honda motors have never produced that much with bolt-ons anyway. the ONLY thing you can do to a previous civic generation using an SOHC motor is forced induction, to which point it'd be stupid to start out with SOHC anyway. swaps excluded, of course. anyone who tells you that the 7th gen EX coupe 5-speed is slower than a 6th gen EX coupe 5-speed obviously hasn't driven both, the G7 isn't much faster, but it sure as hell ain't slower.

FYI, the weight gain from 6>7 is 40 lbs, insignificant considering the increased low-end torque and wider powerband

i have a 98 ex auto and my friends gotta 2001 ex 5 spd. with 17" wheels, eibach sportlines, dc twin canister exhaust, and i helped him put in his aem cold air a few weeks ago. . . .

the interior of the 01 is sooo much better compared to my 98 in terms of design, fit and finish, and comfort.

the engine/perfomance however, seemed a bit more sluggish however with a less noticeable vtec engagement compared to my 98 .. . . however, this could be caused by his 17" tenzos . . . ..

argh. I just typed a butt load and its all gone. somehow.

anyway, here goes again:

s2ks dont have i-VTEC, no matter what year.

i-VTEC, however, did came about due to some functions from the S2k's peppy 2.0 DOHC VTEC

01, 02 Civic has some type of SOHC VTEC...
Honda states in its specification page that 01 Civic EX has VTEC-E but later in the 02 Civic EX it states that it has VTEC...
(if you check in the used car specs page, youc an still see that it says VTEC-E for the 01 Civic EX)
word is that people was getting confused (as well as they should be) so Honda just put VTEC for the EX...

both engines are the same D17A2, though. no matter what Honda says.
IMO, its not the same SOHC VTEC as the previous gen, some speculate that its a 3 stage VTEC, or it could indeed be VTEC-E as Honda first stated... all I know is, when 7th gen civic owners attempt the infamous VTEC light mod, the light comes on wayyy too early (at around 3k rpm?) and stays on till redline.

as for the 01 Civic... its overall better... its also faster, compared to previous Gen, trim for trim.

its safer. NHTSA gives it 5 stars in all sections for the 01 Civic Coupe EX with side air bag. its one of the Top 5 safest car in America. (surprise) In fact, I didnt' break my arm when I got hit broadside... the side air bag came on...

the ride comfort is worse... the problem isn't the front macpherson strut I think, its the new rear compact double wishbone... the rear shocks or springs needs some tunning (which they did in 02, but still needs NEW shocks/spring) the rear is simply too bouncy. while going over bumps, rear passengers may even hit their head on the ceilings!

personally, you should test drive it and see if you like how it handles and etc.

I think it handles alright. I did do a few lil mods... threw in a neuspeed front strut bar, and replace the stock 12mm ex bar for a 19mm RSX rear sway bar. (the 01 has 12mm, the 02 has 13mm rear sway bar.)

what else...

if I would do it all over again, I would have test drove the Protege 5... its a much more interesting car... and its around the price range. (sorta. adds in a grand or two.)

look at other cars before you jump into another Civic.. I mean, why not save up a bit more, and grab an RSX? or I duno, try the new Corollas... there's plenty of new cars, try them all! get your 16 grand's worth.

Id keep the current Civic, losing $3k over another stupid slow Civic isn't anything worth getting. Your Civic is fine, I'd drive it til it dies Although i have an automatic I drove a manual and was impressed for like the first 10 minutes and got bored of it. HEHE Id just stick with ur car get a swap for it and call it a day if anything.

wow.. thanks for all of your comments..

for those who say keep my car.. well.. i'll post some pics of the damage on the side later.. i know it's fixable but really, i just need a fresh start. my old civic i got 2 years ago and it was used.. no benefit of a warranty or anything, so it's just a pile of crap! the hood is dented from where 2 of my "friends" (2 SEPERATE occasions!!) decided to jump onto the hood and roll allllll the way down, and these guys were not exactly small guys. anyway...

i really think it's Mike's car thats making me want one even more.. everytime i see that damn car..

it may be under powered.. it may handle a little worse than the 6th gen.. but i guess i'll find out when i test drive one. the good thing about that is that my sister will be the sales rep going with me so i can really open the car up if i want.

thank you for all of your input...

now, how about mods?
