D16Z6 w/ 5-speed tranny:

My speedo goes crazy when I'm moving over 60-70mph. Sometimes it will bounce all over the place, other times it will just sit steady at 110mph - while I'm in the slow lane getting passed by bigrigs :shocked: . Other times, it seems to read correctly - ie: I'm in one of the middle lanes of the freeway going the same speed as everyone else, and it's reading somewhere around 65-75.

Anyway, I did a quick search, and found a little info about the speed sensor going bad. Does this sound like a symptom of that problem or is my gauge fubar'ed?


Also, since I was thinkin about it: If the speed sensor is the problem, wouldn't it make my cruise control do weird stuff? When I set the cruise it holds the speed I set it to while the speedo is off in it's own world.

 

I'd say VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is likely your problem. Cruise doesn't work from your VSS, it works from vacuum lines.

You should be able to get another VSS from a local junk yard or from www.sohfast.com.

just to make it easier on you, all D series VSS's from 92-00 are interchangeable.

 

I might have a speed sensor for you if you want one. I got a extra EX manual tranny that i believe has the speed sensor still. I just gotta check

 

I have no clue how much these cost new, and unfortunately I found out today that I'm going to be laid off in a couple weeks. :upset:

So what this means is that while I am interested in the offer, if it's going to cost me more than about $40, then don't waste the time with it.

If it's expensive I'll just have to deal with an epileptic speedometer for a bit.
