Default I need opinions plz ASAP-y8 head and block

i went and checked out a local guy selling a y8 head and block. he bought the whole motor from a local shop(with from what i hear a good reputation. no personal experience). he bought it just for the manifolds etc. he was aware of the fact that the previous owner had used nitrous and had caused a detonation or a ring failure( i think thats what he also called it) in cylnder 3.

there is a chip missing out of the piston in cylinder 3, and its pretty rough on the top. the wall seems perfect tho.

i'm interested in the head. my friend wants the block so ill prolly just sell the block to him.

on the head. you could tell which cylinder had the detonation or whatever cuz on the underside where the valves were it was noticably darker and the bottoms of the valves felt rough. but we sprayed some kind of cleaner and it turned out it was just carbon build up. the bottom of the valves were just as smooth as the rest. all the valves in that particular cylinder were closed and seemed to seal perfect. no chips or nics or anything in them.

if you could give me some ideas on what to check for before i buy this that would be MUCH appreciated. i haven't done internal work yet so i didn't know what to look out for. i spent a good hour and half there with him looking it all over and talking about it.

here are some pics. i know they are bad i'm sorry but maybe they will help you help me

thank you guys !

btw i need to get back to him in a day or two cuz there are other people biting at it but he said he would give me first dibs.

p.s- he's asking 100 for the head and the block. head is complete with valve cover and vtec solenoid-anything else it should have on there?

The way the haed is sitting right now, there are going to be some bent valves, #1 intake vlaves and #4 exhaust valves. I would have the head vacuum check for leaks. Looks to be in decent shape. Block needs to be rebuild or perhaps resleeve if honing doesn't get rid of the scoring on cylinder wall.

wait you can see the bent valves? point them out so i know what it looks like lol.

how much do you estimate the vaccum check would run? like 20 bucks or so. someone said around 30 for testing and milling if needed on the bottom

a nagging concern/question is what caused this piston to chip and get scored .

When the camshaft is still on the head like how the pic dipicts, and laying it flat with valves on the bottom will bend the valves. A slight bent is all it takes for new valves. That missing piece is from detonation. Got very hot in there and instead of the spark plug igniting the a/f mixture, heat ignited the end gas while the spark plug ignited the other end and when to flame fronts collides, BOOM. The block is in need of a rebuild. The head may be ok if you're lucky the valves aren't bent. Here a vacuum check is $30-40.

ahh. thank you i appreciate it. i'll talk to the guy tomorrow and ask him to have a leak down test and surface test done. i'll split the cost upfront for the tests and pending them i will decide on the purchase.

thanks cartuner. i appreciate it

prolly caused by deonation
you see how the piston top has little "dents" in it? look how thin the area is between the "dent" and the edge of piston. thats where it melted

ok i asked him if he could take it to his local shop to have a leak test done. and that i could spot him for half the cost of it.

he said that he priced it so low because he really doesn't have the time to take it and have that done. he needs it gone so he priced it to sell in one day.

now i've got a sad face on
i don't know what i should do but i have to let him know by tonight cuz others are asking about it but he's giving me first dibs
