Default Engine ping

Hi all.

Got a small problem with my 1993 Civic Si (EX in the US). THe car is completely stock, BTW. Between 1000-4500 no engine ping, after 4500, the engine starts to ping / knock like mad.

I use 87 octane, tried 91, no change.

Any fixes for this? Is it the timing? If so, can someone tell me how to set it properly?

Thanks.

Is it like a small knock? Or a knock like you know something is smaking in there? If it's the second one then your throwing a rod. If it does it in neutral then you can find out which one it is you can pull one spark plug at a time and see if it stops if it does then you know that's the one.

:edit: I don't know what ping is.

Ohh and KAUAI KANE that book will not tell you what the hell that is.

Well, I guess the term knock was the wrong one. It sounds like a typical engine ping. It doesn't knock at idle or if I rev it or anything like that. Just after 4500 rpm, it sounds like a blender with a bunch of bolts in it rattling around.

Or your valves could be way out of adjustment, or your timing could be off, or you could have a rod knocking. It could be lots of things, hell for that matter if you didn't really know much about cars you could have a bad axle, you might laugh but I have seen it happen.

1. make sure your oil level is fine.
2. check timing.
3. check fuel pressure
4. use oil/fuel additives to clear carbon deposits

then get back to us!

Could just need a tune up.

Looking at the plugs could help if you have the service manual or a chart to compare them to. They're a great place to start if you're looking for an indicator of some kind to point you in the right direction.
