Default lifespan of stock catalytic converter

Hi all,

I was wondering what is the expected life span of a typical catalytic converter on a 96 d16y8 civic? How do you know when a replacement is due?

Thanks.

It should last forever, or until it rusts so much that it disintegrates. You shouldn't need to replace it.

thats not nesc true... if yours O2 sensor goes out causing an incorrect A/F mix, then that can ruin it.

Well, it's not like there is a set mileage that you have to change it at which is what it sounds like he's asking.

If your car is running too rich you can go through a cat in a year or two. But yeah cats should last as long as the car.

160K on my stock cat. I still pass emissions with less than 25% of the allowable readings (knock on wood). It all depends on how the car has been maintained.

Thanks to all....reason why I asked is that mine is now at 240k, and it barely passed the NOX when I took it in for a smog check at 230k, but the other two readings of HC/CO were very good, just the NOX that was just right at the border....so I have been thinking about replacing the catalytic conv. before the next smog check is due in like 2 years....just doing some research now. I live in CA btw...

I guess I should not have done this, but I poured a bottle of fuel injector cleaner into the gas tank like right before the smog check. Wonder if this could have caused a temporary high NOX reading....

Thanks again...
