Default Pros & Cons of High Final Drives?

What is the pros and cons of having a high final drive? For example, the 4.785 final drive of the JDM Integra.

Isn't it the other way around for that?

High numerically:
Better acceleration, lower top speed, worse gas mileage
Low numerically:
Worse acceleration, higher top speed, better gas mileage

my friend has the 4.78 final drive. it's a joy to drive. car loves to rev.

granted it revs high on high ways, the acceleration is worth it.

plus the lsd is an added benefit.

pros: better acceleration, faster into the power band, revs stay higher during shifts.
cons: worse gas mileage, more rpms

pros out weigh the cons in my book

My two main concerns are the higher gas usage (higher revs = more crusing horsepower = more gas expended) and the higher cruising revs (more revs = faster engine wear.)

Most cars with quick final drives usually have a deep 5th to counteract it on the highway. I'd love to drop an 88-89 GTUs 4.3 into my car, however I would ideally need the trans from that car for it's special 5th gear and speedo gear.

Don't forget, with a different final drive gear, your speedometer will be off. My friend's BMW 2002 has new numbers taped to his speedo for this reason. :chuckles:

Would it be better to install a SRR 4.929 final drive instead of a JDM-R 4.785? www.srr-racing.com

Final drive gears of ~5.0+ are a seriously bad idea for a street car, IMHO.
