valve cover gasket leaking?

valve cover gasket leaking?
I have a 95 civic and oil appears to be leaking from the top onto the engine on the side of the oil tank. A friend of mine said that is is probably the valve cover. Does this sound right and if it does is it going to cost a lot of money to get it fixed or is there a way for me to do it myself?

It maybe be the valve cover gasket...
I suggest first, to clean up the oil, run the car, then inspect where the leak is coming from.
If it is indeed coming from the valve cover, then it is an easy fix. Go to Honda, pick up the valve cover gasket for your car, I think it ranges from $40-70. Unscrew your valve cover and remove your old valve cover seal/gasket. I also suggest picking up some silicon (or Hondabond) to ensure the new gasket seats fully. After that, tighten the valve cover bolts CAREFULLY because if you over-tighten, they snap like twigs.
Let me know if this helps or even is the problem.

Yes, do what maxboost said.
It is probably your valve cover gasket.
I bought one for my 94 ex from Honda for $28.
DO NOT overtighten bolts. I did this and broke one off into the head which was a pain to get out.
Yes, you can DIY, but it wouldnt hurt to have an extra mechanically inclined hand around. Good luck

One more thing though, do I have to remove the oil that is in there before removing the valve cover?
It would be a good idea to wipe the edge down where old oil might have accumulated though to create a good seal with the gasket.

may want to invest in a torque wrench for this repair. As the other guys said, making sure you don't over tighten is critical. You can find out the torque numbers from a helms manual.
