Default D16z6/d15b

First, if this is the wrong area for my questions, forgive me.

I have a 92 Si that just received a JDM D15B swap to replace the blown D16Z6. When I start the car up (goes away after a second or two) I get a horrible screaching noise from one of the pulleys (I think). The alternator, PS pump and AC condenser were all taken from the D16Z6 which sat for approx. 3 years unused. I tried some belt dressing but that didn't do the trick. I also noticed the same noise when I turned the AC on so I'm assuming it's the AC condenser pulley? Does this seem logical to everyone? Assuming it is the problem, can I just replace the pulley? If yes, is it extremely difficult? Anyone with similar problems?

Also, the engine seems to be running hot, hotter than normal although my temp guage doesn't indicate any problems. I want to change the thermostat. Looked around online for a DIY guide but didn't find anything that put me at ease. From what I gathered the proper procedure would be:

1. drain system from bottom of rad
2. remove upper and lower hoses
3. remove thermo housing (which is what the lower hose goes to, correct?)
4. replace thermo and gasket with the thingy pointing up
5. connect hoses, fill with water/coolant

If I have anything wrong PLEASE correct me. Any advice/help with either of these issues would be greatly appreciated.

edit: Anyone know where I can purchase a Helms manual for this gen? The .pdf is missing pages.

are the belts off of the d16z6 also? If so, they may be old and brittle, causing the belt noise.

No, they are brand new. Had them replaced during the swap.

I had that happen on the D15b2 on my 88 DX...turned out to be the compressor pulley (sanden type). Unfortunately, at the time i was too poor (college days, too much boozin') to get it fixed, so i took the belt off. In south Texas, i rarely used the A/C anyway...

GOD NO A/C sux in Tx....

I hope that's not your prob...i would also check the idler pulley (if you have one), because some times when they go off kilter, it makes a similar noise.

Again, not an expert, but thats my experience.

OT, but can you mate a d15b head to a d16 block or something of higher displacement?

First, for the screeching noise. Pulleys don't screech... they are solid peices of metal. I have yet to hear a chunk of steel screech at me. It is probably bad bearings in the A/C compressor (not the condenser, that is the AC part that looks like a radiator in the front of the car) so it may need replacing soon.

Now, as for the engine running "hotter then normal," how do you know that if the gauge is still reading the same? :eh:

wow, harsh...first, i said compressor...second, i hate to say it, but its rather obvious, at least to me, that it's the bearings inside the pulleys...oh well, im tired, no need to argue over it...

Thank you for the replies everyone. By "pulley" I of course meant the bearing.

Idler pulley is a very good idea that didn't occur to me. It started making the same sound today after I would get off the throttle and on to the brakes, but go away after a blip of the throttle. Anyone have tips on replacing it?
