Will EX auto tranny work on DX auto
Hello,
My friend has a 1997 DX w/ an automatic tranny that has gone bad. My buddy in Buffalo has a 1997 EX automatic that only has 20k on it for sale. I would assume that the only differance between these cars would be the vtec on the ex motor, but my local salvage yards says that the EX tranny won't work with the DX motor. Does anyone know different. I would assume the EX tranny would work?

Thank you for the reply. I was just curious how you can confirm this information. I know all of the b-series tranny's are interchangable.....I just can't figure out why the junkyard says it won't fit. You would think they want to sell as many trannys as possible, so I can't figure out why they would say no.

just like the b-series, the d-series trannies besides the whole auot/manual deal, are interchangable.
dont listen to the junkyard clowns, 9 out of 10 times they have no idea what they're talking about.

THanks again.... I was a little concerned about ecu issues. If there was an issue, would it just be a matter of switching to the EX ecu, or would the wire harness be different. Could you also provide me with an explanation of what "grade logic" is. Thanks again..... GREAT HELP GUYS!!!

It should work fine....the Ex tranny has shorter gears however. My LX has grade logic and since it has the same engine/tranny as a DX, it won't be an issue.

The optional automatic transmission includes Honda's Grade Logic Control, which selects and holds the appropriate gear when going uphill or downhill

I was curious if anyone has ever done this swap---if anyone has, please email me. In regards to the taller gear statement. I knew that was true with the 5 spd, but that is also true with the automatic?
I checked the mechanics manual today, and in terms of automatic trannies, they do not differenciate between models. They just have one section on the auto, which also leads me to believe this swap will work.

You really wont feel any difference since it is an auto.
The only thing that I can think of that would be different is that youlle just notice that the gears shift sooner, but no biggie
