as for taking the tail lights out...
1. open trunk
2. pull back carpet behind tail lights
3. remove 2 screws holding the plastic cover thingy off
4. remove bulb sockets
5. remove 4 gold nuts from the lens
6. push from inside the car out to get the lens out (it may stick if they have been in there a while)
7. look up
8. remove screws holding plastic thingys
9. remove bulb sockets from tailgate lenses
10. remove gold nuts
11. push up
12.
i'm not sure if 5th gens have these, but on my 6th gen there is 1 little nut-type-thingy on the edge of the trunk lid.. it is black and maybe 3/4" long.. you need to take that off too
here are some pics of my tails.. i blacked out the tailgate lenses to see how it would look if i shaved them.. i kinda like how they look and i'm too lazy to put em back
no one on the board really likes em, but i do.

i left the reverse bulbs in to keep things legal
