As long as the motor still retains the catalytic converter, O2 sensors, etc. and you have it inspected by a state referee after the swap, you should be okay. But I think that there are others here that could fill in the details. I know it's not as simple as I make it seem.

as long as the motor ur swappin in is same year or higher for ur car, then its kewl. make sure u have all the smog stuff hook up accordin to that engine and car diagrams. cat, egr(if any), usdm ecu(if jdm engine) all sensors hook up, o2, ect..., all vacumn hoses connected up. no high flowin fuel pump or modified fuel pressure. make it all stock as possible. aftermarket intakes, make sure its carb ex and have the number visible. use stock header if possible. basically once u get that all so wonderful BAR sticker, its all happiness from then on. i know i am, cuz i got one.
i live here in cali "bay area" the motor cannot be older than the car for starters.
second there is a visual inspection so all the 02 sensors and knock sensors need to be in there original location.they go by the helms manuels and look for every thing.
then is just the regular emissions tests if you pass those your good to go.they give you a sticker stating your new motor to put in the car and thats that.plus a few hundred bucks to a smog rep wouldnt heart either.if you live in the bay area there are quit a few around and not to hard to spot...good luck to you and me "i got a swap coming up also in the next couple weeks"
