When are you supposed to power slide?
Racing noob, sorry.
When is it appropriate to power slide through a turn? (not drifting)
How exactly is this done?
At a import race I saw the FWD civics would (handbrake?) their rear wheels to lock as they took the turns. Why is this a good technique? Thanks

this isnt a good technique. and yes this is drifting, thats how you drift an FF. think about it, does it make sense to lock up your wheels so that you loose traction?
in competition, a drift is called a mistake

in competition, a drift is called a mistake
Drifting might be appropriate in races where there isn't much traction to begin with (rally), but even then drivers prefer having traction over not.

ass dragging=forcing a controlled slide
and how is throttle off drifting in an ff car different than an fr car? If you understand the fundamentals of physics and can relate them to a car, you know what drifting really is. Enough said.
DRifting in racing? means you're slowing down without need. Bad for racing. Good for styloe? You know it!

in any type of racing that takes place on a track, road course, or parking lot(autocross) its never appropriate to slide. In rallycross, rallying and sometimes ice-racing, sliding can be useful, but ultimately, the fastest way around any corner is within the limits of traction.
