Set it on an old tire. Your safest bet would be to lay it on the exhaust manifold side.

Are you on crack? Just set it down flat on the oil pan. I ahve 4 engines in my garage doing just that. And have you ever seen pics of engine supplier's warehouses? Engines sitting on the oil pans....

werd we sit all our motors on the oil pan when we pull them.

Why not? It's not going to hurt anything and the center of gravity is lower. It's not like you are going to drag it down the road or something.

I can see two problems with setting it on the oil pan:

1: You can mess up the oil plug bung. If it gets bumped wrong, you can crack the weld and leak oil.

2: The engine can tip over because the center of gravity is higher and fall on the intake/exhast manifold.

Honestly, I don't have a problem with either way. I've just had the best luck laying them down in/on an old tire.

Just my view point. I'm just trying to be helpful.

I do agree if you have an old tire it won't hurt anything to sit the motor on it oil pan side down But you never want to set a motor on its side like you said. h:

If you lay it down on the exhaust manifold, you are putting pressure on something that is cast steel and the o2 sensor, and putting unneeded stress on the head, h\eadgasket, and head bolts.
What weld are you talking about cracking on the oil pan? The whole pan is stamped steel... And about screwing up the threads, it's never been an issue, plus, if you have the oil plug firmly in place, how can it mess with the threads any worse than if you drove over a stick in the road that hit it?
