What years and model Civic came stock w/the VTEC engine?

Also, what years constitute each generation for the Civic? I know
the Accords generations.. (i.e. 1990-93, 1994-1997, etc...).

Also, are there any concerns regarding Civics in the 1994-1997 timeframe that I should be aware of? or any positives about a specific year with a major improvement?

I am looking for a early/mid-90's good value (less than $4,500)used Civic or Accord for my 17 yr. old daughter in north-west NJ.

great info. there but for a non-fanatic like me it's almost too much detail.

But to summarize, it looks like in the early/mid-90's only the EX model comes with a VTEC engine in the base Civic line.

 

In America the VX, HX, EX, and SI models all had VTEC.


In Canada the VX, HX, SI, and SIR models had VTEC.

 

How about what years of Civic represent which generation?

 

I wouldn't go below the '92 models because then you're dealing with OBD0.

OBD1 = '92-'95
OBD2 = '96+

Also, I wouldn't use anything above a '00 because they then went with a completely different engine setup (mounts and tranny... many many differences)

but I'm not a Honda expert (I have a BMW & older Vette) so I don't know all the nicknames you guys use here. Though I did own a '97 CL for 5 years.

What does OBD1 & D2 mean?

 

OBD = On Board Diagnostics

dont know the main differences though between 1 and 2, although i know that OBD2 has 2 o2 sensors h:

obd = on board diagnostic

it's like generatiosn of computers.

obd2 engines are a bit trickier to put into an obd1 car and vice versa.

92-95 civic are the best platform in my book. the best looking and the lightest weight cars.
96-00 civic are good also, got a little more porky, and different rear suspension.

92-95 civic use the chassis code of EG, EH and other i don't feel like looking up so i'll refer to them as EG in this post.
96-00 civic use the chassis code of EK and others, but i'll refer to them as EK's in this post.

EG civic can take lots of parts from the 94-01 integra.
rear suspension, brakes, engine front seats, among other parts with little modification.

EK civic share quite a bit with the 94-01 Integra but not as much. rear lower control arms are different, using a different type of shock but you can buy kits to make the 92-95 civic's work.

Because of how much the EG's share with the Integra's the civic to get from the mid 90's would be the EG's. 93 added the passenger side airbag. some civic ex's had abs, and rear sway bar (found more on the 4 door than the coupe or hatch)

EK civic are also nice. 96-98 civic were obd2, not as popular as the 99-00 civic's.

99-00 civic's has OBD2.1 some call it OBD3. Very similar to obd2, with major difference i can recall of it having an engine wire harnass that ran all the way back to car computer. older versions were two piece one on the engine and other on the chassis that ran to the computer.

99-00 had a face redesign as well. more popular look. In the united states we got the SI, in canada sir. same car, canada had a different color option.

it had a more powerful engine, the b16. dohc vtec engine, 1.6 liter.

b series are found in integra and del sol vtec's. these are the popular swaps in to the civic with the original sohc motors (d series)

the si had abs rear sway bar and larger fron tsway bar with more power windows, doors and moonroof. and the the popular blue

stock civic with the most fun = si, but only available in manual.

best civic ever? 92 civic vx, lightest weight. best looks. best fuel economy.

01+ civic had a bigger change than ever. lose of dual wishbone suspension, different type of engine than before. new platform.

bigger than all previous civic's, also the heaviest. new engine has individual spark coil per cylinder, unlike the distributor on previous civic'.


just buy a nice 95 civic, gets no better :P
