Default Advancing Timing? not sure

I want to advance the timing of my car. I think due to high miles i am losing compression. How do i advance the timing, and what other modifications are necessary besides running a higher octane fuel?

to advance the timing, jump the service connector, start the car and rotate the dizzy towards the firewall. and measure it using a timing gun 1-2 degrees is good enough.
