A lot of people dont believe me...but this is what I've read:
The Japanese never had the coupe style. But North Americans were always into "coupes" b/c they were "supposely" more sporty, and they wanted to appeal to the "female market" So, the US had the Civic redesigned to coupe form to "supposely" appeal to the female market. They tried it with the 5th generation Civic, and little did they know that it was a success, female market or not. [from what I've read/told]
So if you look back, the Civic chassis never had a coupe form until 92-95, and continued with 96+. But if you look into Japan's market, they've always imported the Coupe from the UK or US. Hence the EJ designation on the chassis, not EG or EK. The Japanese love hatches and sedans. The Americans do not. [reason why the hatchback disappeared for a few years and why the Si Coupe did so well] Seeing how bad the new Si hatch now isnt selling so well, America might rid of it from our market forever.

In Japan, they're starting to import coupe shells from USDMland. Over here though, it's rare that someone appreciates sedans, however there is a cult following... Hatchbacks are really popular among tuners here because of the sleek looks and weight advantage.
But really, it's more of an aesthetic affair than anything else.
