I remember back when I first got into tuning/building cars in a serious way, was with my '88 Volvo 744 turbo. One of my best friends had a little brother with a Chevy Malibu he'd inherited from his grandfather... and was busy trying to make it fast. Intake, exhaust, lowered it, etc.

But the thing I remember most was the huge "WHOA!!" that rippled through the male teen crowd when the rumor came out that he was getting a "Samurai-style body kit!!" ... it was the hottest news of the year.

Luckily, though, he never got it.

Since he never got it, no one really knows. Some obscure company must make a "samurai" kit for the Malibu. I asked him once, but he was too drunk to answer me coherently.

Man, even with dual exhaust that car sounded weaksauce. Sad.

Speaking of Chevy, the Malibu kid was really sick of the auto that came with the car, and was on the verge of trying to swap a manual from a V6 Camaro in there. He ended up selling the car, I think, before it materialized.

He's ALSO the kid who was quoted ***$500*** a month for a twin-turbo Supra when he was 17. That's for full coverage, but STILL. He said he hung up the phone after the guy said the number... and agent called back immediately and said "Are you alright??" all worried he had passed out or gone into a coma or something...lol!

$500 a month? That's insane! I pay $2400 a year for full coverage!

Yeah, it IS insane. He said his agent seemed really sorry about it, wanted to lower it but couldn't find any way to do it. The deductible was like $500 or $1000, too.

His older brother, my good friend, has a 95 Eclipse GS-T. He was always pretty jealous, even though they're close, so after he sold the Malibu he started looking for cars with not just one but TWO turbos - to outdo his bro in one way or another. With only TT cars in mind, he started (smartly) by calling his insurance agent and getting quotes on early model (i.e. affordable) cars like the MkIV Supra, 300ZX, RX-7, 3000GT, etc. He refused to accept anything pre-1992. The Supra was the highest, but all were very expensive. Eventually he gave up and started driving his mom's Isuzu Rodeo.
