Default Confusion

I posted a message below about my car not starting and I just have one question. Why would it just stop. No symptoms or anything, workes one day and not the next. Plugs, wires, distributor cap can't just work one hour and then not the next can they? It couldn't be the battery because I tried jumping it and it still cranks and turns over fine, just wont start. So can any of the Simple things (inexpensive) just stop working like that, with no signs of progressive deterioration? Thanks!

Well one thing I noticed, I took out my plugs and they are saposed to be gaped at .040 and they were twice that! I don't even see how the car could run with a gap twice the size. Maybe the electrods finaly wore down just enough so the spark can't jump the giant gap?
