Default is this good trans fluid?

hi folks, i know this topic has been killed to death, BBUUTT...i wanted to change the trrans. fluid (5 speed) in my 94 civic.
I found some castrol syntec gear oil (sae 75w-90) oil in my garage. is this good for my car?
i read the haynes manual and it says 5w-30 oil..now is that the regular oil that you can buy at any gas station or is it like a special mtf oil that i need? if now i may pass by the dealership to buy the origional stuff...any comments?
thanks

Don't put 75w-90 gear oil in your tranny. That is waaay too thick. Just get Honda Mtf.

Probably $2 a quart.

Actually just get any 5w-30 motor oil. I forgot that Honda uses engine oil in their transmissions. h:

There is a drain plug on the bottom of the tranny and a filler plug on the side of it. When you fill up the tranny, the fluid level should be right at the bottom of the filler hole, where you can just stick you finger in there to check for tranny fluid.

A rule of thumb for changing tranny fluid is at every 24k miles or 2 years which ever comes first. But the only way to know for sure when to change it is by the recommended interval the manufacturer says to change it at.

I'd recommend Honda Manual Transmission Fluid or Redline MTF.

10w-30(non-synthetic) works just fine. Honda recommends every 30,000 or 24 months - I change mine every 15K or less.
