which is a better offset? 40mm or 45mm?

depends on the rim size. They say 45 is better for 16s and 17s at 40-42.

Well this depends on the width of your wheel. If the wheel you're looking is 7" wide, you wanna get a higher offset. You don't necessarily get to choose the offset. I'm just referring that the wheel offset should fall somewhere in between those two numbers in order for it to fit your car with minimal to no problems.

If you're looking at the wheel from it's side, the offset would be how far the face of the wheel would stick out from the center of the wheel.

so 17x7 means the rim is 7" wide?
the lugs are: 4x100 4x114 universal(this is what he said twice)
and offset of:40mm
i just ordered the rims-17" adr ricochet's in silver

You got it. Although let me correct myself that if you had a 7.5" wide wheel, then you would've needed either a +42mm or +45mm offset.

A +40mm offset should be fine with a 7" wide wheel.

Congrats on the purchase. BTW, the tires that you want to mate them with is 205/40/17.

205/40/17 exactly what i got. i got a tire and wheel package(tires mounted/balanced w/ lug nuts) for 560 shipped to my door by the end of next week!!

I'm guessing like Visa, or Interceptor, or Hankook. Somewhere along those line of tires.
