I notice that on my 92 accord too. I think it also has to do with the way a person hold the steering wheel. If you have a tendency to hold the steering wheel from the top and you let your arm hang, your unknowingly aplying downward pressure on it. Along with the sun and heat this will pull the plastic/rubber material away from the metal frame inside. I have seen this happen many times and the one thing in common is exsesive wear from the area where it coming apart. Anyway a little too much of a explanation but those are my 2 cents.
