One of the laws of air volume is that the more direct the airflow is, the more molecules will fit in the area and the quicker they will flow. Hence one of the main reasons K&N filters are worth every penny is that they "straighten" the airflow out into a smooth, even, constant flow. When the molecules flow in random, inconsitant directions, they bounce off each other and keep from filling the volume to it's capacity.
