Sometimes the DVD player's initial setup utility has you set a preferred picture mode and what sort of tv you have it hooked up to. You should try and see if there is an option on the DVD player to set it to a 16:9 widescreen tv.

and yes, it depends on the aspect ratio of the movie, some will still have bars, they'll just be smaller than usual.
