I can't figure out why either... and I've been out of computer retail for nearly 3 years.
Chalk it up to corporate inertia.

ATI's additional role as supplier to Apple has only helped swell their R&D budget, much to Nvidia's detriment.

Surely ATI is traded publicly... I wonder who owns them?
