I think you have that backwards. Straight-cut gears are stronger. The contact load is spread out more evenly across the gear tooth.

The most famous example of this is the M21 "rock crusher" transmission from GM circa 1970. It was essentially the same transmission as the M22, which used helical-cut gears. But the M21 with its straight-cut gears handled a lot more torque.
