It sounds like a reverse gear. Your reverse gear is the same thing. A straight cut gear. Straight cut gears do not have rounding on the teeth of the gears, making them very loud but very strong.
There are a couple types of dog boxes. There is a half-dog box. This is usually a tranny with 1,2, and 3rd gear all straight cut gears, the 4, 5th and whatever (6 if you got em) are gears cut similar to what you have in your car now- so full synchro mesh and whatnot.
A half dog box is great if you are running ALOT of power, but still want streetability. The noise from a full dog box is ****ing insane. Way to noisy for street.
A full dog box is a tranny with all the gears straight cut. Noisy, but the best type of gear to have when you are running alot of power. WRC cars use these because they run lots of power, and they run over very rough terrain. The straight cut gears help to prevent a gear from stripping on the rough terrain coupled with all that power.
Finally, dog gears are wider because they do not need synchro mesh inbetween the gears, the gears can be made wider (hence stronger) because there is more space in the tranny. Every car has...dog gears basically, but with synchros to make shifting easier and transitions smoother.
