Most of you are thinking the same way I am about the house....its pointless for me to move out and get an apartment, and pay $1200-$1500 a month in rent (thats what a decent one bedroom goes for around here), and hardly be able to save anything, when I could stay at home (help out with the bills of course) and save my money. I really have no problem living at home...my parents don't give me any shit, and I have nobody to account to. Everyone who I talk to who is older and wiser than me tells me to just stay at home as long as I can and save. When I move out, its going to be into my own home, not a money pit apartment. But basically, most of you are giving me the good advice....save for the house, and screw the car. My car right now isn't bad anyway...I like it.l I've been tossing this idea around all day after reading your advice this morning. What I might try to do now is save a few bucks this summer (work some OT), and maybe drop 3 or 4 grand on an old 4X4 suv or truck ('87-'92 or so), and use it as a winter beater just for when it snows. I can spare dropping that kind of money on it, and if its old, the insurance should be cheap. That kind of money isn't really going to set me back, yet will get me to work in a blizzard. That way, I can still keep saving.
