The reason the light stays on is because there is no airbag to close the circuit. Just like your door switch, when the switch is open (pushed in with door closed), the interior lights and door ajar lamp go out. So when the plug is removed or there is a problem with the system, the air bag light will go on. I personally don't think the luxury of leather is worth the compromise of safety. But, to each his own.
