The same exact thing happened to me last summer man. I was waiting in line at Wendys and the temp shot up to red, then went down as I drove home. We had no idea what was going on so we took it to a local shop.
It was a simple fix that we didn't think of....
Check the fuses for your cooling fans....mine were blown so the temp shot up when idling. This happened like 2 weeks after I got my system installed, and the owner of the shop said he had seen this happen before. Not just in Hondas, but in any car the whole electrical system could be effected by such a sudden change (especially my 2 12's before I had a capacitor).
Anyway check it out that could be the problem.
