He probably has worn or maybe even a couple blown shocks.

Any "fine autoparts retailer" such as NAPA, Autozone, Pep Boys, etc will carry suitable new shocks if you have no interest in performance. You will also need a few special things to take off the shocks, like a spring compressor and preferably a Chilton's, Hayne's, or a FSM.
