i had the same prob about 2 months ago. I changed the thermostat, but when i tested the old one(put it in boiling water) it was fine. If the cap is bad the coolant doesnt flow through the rad. I bought a new rad cap and i think that was all the problem was. Try that before you go and waste money on a new rad.
