The light output is decreased a little, but because of the greater contrast, I think it becomes more visable.

As for the number of coats, that's going to vary a lot. The paint is very thin so you have to do a whole lot of super light coats, maybe up to 20. And remember that when you look at the lens, it's going to apprear darker when it's in place than on the bench top.
