LOL.... older Volvos have been known to do this also, due to the terrible build quality of the entire dash assembly. My old '82 240 DL would routinely just stop working randomly for 20-50 miles at a time, then come back on. Wasn't a loose cable, or anything - I tightened everything.
So when the car died at 202,202 (!), it actually had like 203,000 on it, at least. It was REALLY annoying, because along with the malfunctioning odometer, the gas gauge was horribly innaccurate as well, and I was forced to use mileage as a way to determine how much gas I had left. The number of times I nursed that car one....more....mile.... to get it to a gas station. Man... I perfected the art of 2nd gear launches, shifting straight to 4th, then hitting overdrive.
