Default Check engine light in 1997 CL

I have a friend who drives a Acura CL, 1997 model I believe. Well the check engine light never goes off. She stated to me when it was purchased, the light had always been on. The salesperson told her that it isn't a problem, something regarding a "timer...blah blah-nut kick". The exact wording slips my mind, but can I read the CL's check engine code like my 92-95 Civic (paper clip/conductive wire)? I would like to help her be rid of the light and it would be nice to come to be able to provide a solution. Again, this isn't a sensor malfunctioning or anything, something that has no affect on the car whatsoever, but like anyone else it can be annoying to look at. How should I go about being rid of this? I was thinking to check over all the fuses if no problems, reset the ECU to see if it presents itself again, then read the ECU as a last resort. Any suggestions or help is appreciated, thanks.
