For the most part ABS is only helpful in wet conditions, most peoples first reaction when traction is lost in wet conditions is to slam on the brakes, and if you are experienced you know that is not the right thing to do. In dry conditions however, ABS has a very small effect.
I should also add that it is a myth that cars with ABS have shorter stopping distances than the ones that don't.
the purpose of ABS is not shorter stopping distances.. but rather control in harsh braking conditions.. something flies out in front of you and you slam on the brakes.. you are then able to control the car around the obstacle with abs rather then locking and sliding..
