Yes that would be griding. Most people do it alot when going into reverse. They think that they are in reverse and let out the clutch but then you hear that awful metal to metal sound. Which just means you need to put it all the way in gear. Needless to say grindnig gears isn't a good thing but i'm sure you already new that.
