My personal preference for alarms is make them so obnoxious the theives won't even bother, and if they do it will be nice and painful for them.
In the end that's what insurance is for. If you have have stuff in your car that you can't live without and would be the end of the world if it gets jacked, it shouldn't be in your car to begin with.
