They *can* last forever ... if you drive extremely conservatively, or if you have a REALLY weak motor (like my old 5spd Volvo 240) with a REALLY strong clutch. When that car died at 200K+, the clutch was as good as the day it came out of the factory. But that's exceptional. "Normal" driving will probably result in an eventual replacement.
