the best thing to do would be to open up the center console so when you hear the clicking(just remove the panel that is around the shifter),so you can see where its coming from. i know that there is a actuator that works with your brakes that allows you to move the shifter when you press that brakes. there may be something similar or a sensor that detects the shifter position.
