I spent a loooooooong time cleaning this thread up, so if the BS that went on happens again, I will not be a happy man, so keep it clean, watch the flames, and dont try and state opinion as fact.
The only thing I wanted to add was already stated by Noel, projector retrofits are no more legal than the reflector kits for the reasons he stated below. The individual parts, casing, projectors etc are, but when combined thats a different story.
Also all OEM HID's are not self leveling; check my sig for an example of one such OEM system.

All HID kits that weren't made by the factory are illegal, some are just less illegal. All lighting needs to be DOT approved. The HID's in a reflector housing are obviously worse than what see-fu/illusion's ideal method and more likely to be noticed and more annoying. However, what illusion/see-fu propose is illegal for the simple fact that the product was not intended for use on such cars in the US by the DOT and they aren't likely to be ticketed
As repeated above, YOU DON'T NEED SELF LEVELING IN AMERICA FOR HIDS. Acura's, Lincoln's, nissans, the chrysler's are all examples. On the autobahn they must be self leveling.
